Riding the Algorithm: Repurposing delivery workers’ data into a digital commons

Centre for Research Architecture (Goldsmiths) in collaboration with International Workers of Great Britain (London) / UK
An increasing number of jobs, especially in food delivery, are overseen and organised remotely by what is defined as management algorithms. This research examines how in algorithmic management, delivery workers are engaged in a process of constant improvement of production, under continuously evolving rules that are unknown to them. This is possible through the extraction of the data they generate, which (in)forms the production process and becomes capitalized by platform companies to attract investment. The aim of the project, then, is to propose an alternative exploration of the data generated by riders by developing a crowd-sourced app for delivery workers: Sabot.

Sabot has been conceived in conversation with riders from South London and members of the International Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) union, and has the aim to subvert the information asymmetry between worker and algorithm. A riders’ app allows to create a digital commons, a real-time collective repository that can inform decisions, breakup riders’ isolation, leverage work conditions and contest the mechanisms of value extraction enabled by platform economy. The proposal goes beyond the demand of transparency to tech companies and understands that to reshape a system it’s necessary to engage with it.

An original idea developed for Azimut360.
The goal of the project was to achieve a mobile and renewable solution that
would allow to reinforce energy needs of diagnostic laboratories for Probitas
Foundation. The container serves as the structure to hang the solar panels and
contains the inverters and batteries that ensure energy supply for the most
remote places. All materials are transported inside the container overseas to
be set up locally. It can be disassembled to be transported to different
locations and adapt to shifting energy requirements in off-grid rural areas.
              Currently, a process of standardization
and improvement of the container is being realised to propose a replicable
solution for zones lacking grid service with a European Union Horizon 2020 grant for the Research and Innovation program (Innowwide)

Azimut360, the Medical Research Council (MRC)
and the M’Bolo Association (The Gambia), carried out the installation of a
501.33 kWp grid-tied solar system in The Gambia entirely installed by women. My
role was to design, procure, coordiante construction, training and
commissioning of the biggest installation in The Gambia so far.

This initiative has resulted in a 27%
reduction of MRC’s expenditure on electricity (about 160,000 US$ per
year). The PV system was entirely installed by a crew of 38 women from
Fandema’s Renewable Energy Installation team, which is a central part of the
Mbolo Association Educational project. I coordinated the technical and
theoretical aspects of the training on solar installations and worked with them
on the installation of the plant.

Know-how
transfer to the women only Fandema’s Solar Energy Installation team was one of
the main goals of the project. The expected result of the participation in the
training activities was that the participants could design and install future
solar systems on their own, hence replicating and upscaling the existing
systems and creating employment opportunities for women.

Sindicat de Llogateres / Spain / January 2021

Lead Researcher
The purpose of the project was to improve QGis skills by analysing the rent bubble in Barcelona and obtaining representations of its impact in the city. The project allowed to rethink the strategy of deployment of Barcelona’s Rent Union [Sindicat de Llogateres]. I developed a database crossing data from census, National Institute of Statistics in Spain (INE), land registry and the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.
A set of maps with QGis show:

The rent increase respect the shift in income between 2015-2018 by census section, to analyse not only the areas with highest tension of rent increase, but also the population most afflicted by the increase. This map allowed to choose which censal sections were most important to inform about Sindicat’s activity.Concentration of property in census section. Using land registry information on vertical property (buildings owned by a single landlord/company) a map with the concentration of vertical blocks by censal section was made, allowing to choose which areas to inform about Sindicat’s activity.

Azimut 360 / Spain / 2021
Project Manager

On April 2019, a new decree on renewable
energies in Spain opened the door to rethinking solar installations and
self-consumption. Working with two neighbour’s communities in two different
buildings, two photovoltaic installations, Camelies
83 (PV 6kW) and La Borda (PV 8kW)
have been designed, installed and legalized as the first collective
self-consumption communities in Spain. The solar panels installed on the roof
supply the common load (e.g. elevator, staircase lighting) and the excess
energy is distributed to the neighbours to reduce their electric bill. The
project combines engineering with community management. These pilot projects
will serve as example to be replicated with the development of an implementation
tool and personnel training for which I obtained a grant for Azimut360 in Impulsem
El Que Fas call.

commissioning of eleven installations of 500kWp. The
challenge for this project laid in the administrative burdens for legalization,

with shared consumption with public buildings in a radius of 500m, improving
the use of energy and promoting a new electrical consumption model of energy
decentralisation.
